1. Exit from 39,045 meter / 128,100 ft: The Stratos CYPRES is connected to the capsule with an activation cable, similar to a static line. During the climb to altitude, the CYPRES was in an off condition. On exit the static line is pulled out of its metal housing, thus switching the unit on. After a 5 second delay it changes into monitoring mode, which is comparable to the Expert CYPRES in sport environment with a permanent measuring of air-pressure and calculation of altitude and speed.

2. Acceleration Phase: Extremely low air-pressure and maximum acceleration at this phase creates special challenges for the sensor and the programming, as there have been only simulations for this scenario but no tests under real conditions.
At this stage Felix intended to break the sound barrier, as only in this area is the air resistance low enough. After 46.5 seconds, at an altitude of 29,200 meters / 95,800 ft, he gained the maximum speed a human being ever reached in freefall: 373 m/s

3. Turbulence Phase: Air resistance does not increase linearly with descending altitude. Big differences in density and heavily fluctuating upstream flow can lead to violent turbulence’s and dangerous lateral accelerations. Some years ago we had been able to carry a logger on board of a space rocket, showing peaks up to 17 G at the return from space to earth. For stabilizing and slowing down, a drogue chute was integrated into the parachute container system, but Felix didn‘t want to use it, as an early use of the drogue would have hindered breaking the sound barrier. Whether or not to activate the drogue was a difficult decision Felix had to make. Approximately 1/2 second after gaining his maximum speed, Felix was pushed into flat spins. About 30 seconds and 22 rotations later, he was able to stop the turns where he had experienced peak levels above 3 times of earth‘s gravitational pull.

4. Deceleration Phase: Passing the Armstrong Line* after 1 min 4 sec freefall at 18,300 meters / 60,000 ft the air density became sufficiently homogenous to give Felix the possibility to control his freefall. His speed decreased with rising strength to the physically well known freefall velocities. (This is changing exponentially to altitude.) Also, the CYPRES measurements and calculation now reached familiar territory within its specifications.

5. During the normal jump height, Felix experienced a difficult condition due to the shielding spacesuit and a total weight of 120 KG / 265 lbs, resulting in little mobility and restricted perception of wind flow. 4 min 20 sec later he opened the main canopy at 2,350 meters / 7,700 ft. He descent with a wingloading of 0.98 and with a vertical rate of about 4 m/s (9 mph).

6. CYPRES activation area: As a derivative of Military and Aircrew CYPRES the activation altitude for the Stratos CYPRES had to be programmed manually with an air-pressure value prior to the jump. The entered value of 812 millibar / hPa was equivalent to 810 meters / 2,657 ft above Roswell. With 35 m/s (78 mph) the activation speed is the same as for the Expert CYPRES, as rig and canopies were adjusted to the special jump conditions to reach a normal descent behavior.

7. CYPRES debriefing: The extreme conditions with the tremendous acceleration, enormous fluctuations of pressure and temperature at high altitude did not irritate the Stratos CYPRES technology. Each moment it worked flawlessly and followed the jump situation exactly.
Felix’s canopy flight was controlled and under safe circumstances so the Stratos CYPRES did not need to interfere. It would have been a different case if Felix would not have been able to stop the Flat Spin. During his 22 turns the G-Force was measured with some peaks up to 3 G´s. Those extreme values could have caused unconsciousness if he would have turned more. Followed by an uncontrollable freefall, the Stratos CYPRES would have activated at the air-pressure of 812 millibar / hPa. With the matching size of his reserve canopy in relation to his weight and rate of descent, the opening of his reserve was planned at the altitude of approx. 800 meters / 2,625 ft above the ground level of Roswell. Due to the fact, that the landing area in the desert was approximately 230 meters / 750 ft higher than the take off elevation, the reserve canopy opening altitude would have happened at approximately 580 meters / 1,900 ft. This is sufficient for a safe landing with the reserve parachute.
In case that Felix needed the drogue for stabilization, then the second CYPRES cutter would have disconnected the drogue simultaneously while cutting the reserve closing loop for the initiation of the reserve opening.

- All height indications are in meters / ft and sea level
- Roswell is 1,016 meters / 3,333 ft above sea level
* the “Armstrong.line” is defined at 19,000 meters / 62,335 ft above sea level and describes the outline of the so called air-filled space, meaning all technical devices are not able to calculate reliable with air pressure.

1994 - Frenchman Patrick de Gayardon studies and jumps a revolutionary wingsuit design. Marking the beginning of modern skyflying. The suits are made of fabric only, with wings featuring a bottom and top surface, linked by ribs. The wings inflate with ram air like modern square parachutes. The suit features a safety system, allowing the wings to separate via a wire running down the wing and body. He does some incredible flights at the Mont Blanc, in the Grand Canyon, etc.
